RKF BREED STANDARD

Kavkazskaya Ovcharka - Standard 328.
Adopted by Russian Kennel Federation 1997, awaiting approval by FCI.

BRIEF HISTORICAL ESSAY
The Kavkazskaya Ovcharka is one of the ancient breeds, it descends from the Mastiff-like dogs of the Tibet that are related by their origin to the shepherd and fighting dogs of Asia. For many years these fine dogs accompanied the cattle-breeders on the vast territories that stretched from the Caucasus steppes and foothills to the Plateau of Iran. Mostly this breed has been formed in the severe mountain conditions.

GENERAL APPEARANCE
A large dog of the rough built type, with massive bone and strong, well-developed musculature. ....

Caucasian Ovcharka as LGD.
NewsGuest writes "I bought my first Caucasian Ovcharka, Nuch NV 98-00 Mˆrkomaan Enkeli as LGD.

I had just lost my very lovely dobermann, Aleksandra, because she tried to drive away a female bear with two small bear kids from my property. The result of this fight was that my dobermann was killed by the bear.

Then I thought that something had to be done. Because I didn't want to move from Finnskogen, what it's called here I live.

But I didn't want to loose my dogs either.

So I looked everywhere to find a breed that was really great as LGD, and then I found this wonderfull breed, Caucasian Ovchaka. And in my opinion, this must for sure be the very best breed as LGD."

Spelling OVCHARKA
EsqCaucasians writes "The word "Ovcharka" is a Russian word, in Cyrillic alphabet, that does not have a direct English translation. It is therefore often TRANSLITERATED, a process of writing the alphabetical characters in another language (such as English) in a way that represents the same sound or sounds. Transliteration is done by rules, and there are accepted international and national rules for it promulgated by the US library of Congress and the United Nations. Applying the these rules, there is only ONE CORRECTLY SPELLED transliteration of the word "Ovcharka" into English language as follows:

O-V-CH-A-R-K-A

In other Roman character languages, we see the word Ovcharka transliterated and spelled without the 'h" or with a "t" because transliteration of Cyrillic characters into Roman characters is a language specific exercise under the rules, so the spelling may be different depending on the target language. That is why the transliteration of the Cyrillic character that looks like an oddly shaped "y" becomes "tch" in German, "c" in Serbian, and "ch" in English, per the United Nation rules.

An argument recently put forth on the net, is that "tch" is somehow more "phoenetically" correct than "ch". The soft "ch" sound of the words "Michigan" and "Charlotte" were sited as examples of why the word "Ovcharka" should be spelled with a "tch" contrary to UN transliteration rules.

However, the words the soft "ch" words, "Michigan" and "Charlotte" are French derived place names and are not representative of English pronunciation. We don't say "Dez Moinez", we say " De Moin" , another French-based place name. A "ch" sound, in typical English usage, for example the words "change", "charred", "chased", "chilled"

is -ch and not -sch

therefore, it is not necessary to add a "t" in front of the "ch" for a hard "ch" sound pronunciation.* Spelling as "tch" does not make the word phonetically correct. In English, "tch" would be voiced "ovt-charka", which is clearly wrong. Hence the UN and US LoC rules:

Breed, Owners Determine Aggressive Dogs
NewsGuest writes "By Larry O'Hanlon, Discovery News

- Just how aggressive - or phobic - your dog is has as much to with its
breed as its owner, say Danish animal scientists.

In a study of more than 4,300 dogs with behavior problems, younger owners
with little understanding of dog breeds or training had more trouble with
dog-to-dog aggression, poodles and retrievers came off as more easily scared
and urban dogs were more aggressive than their rural counterparts.

The study is in the April issue of the journal Preventative Veterinary
Medicine.

Researchers develop new method preventing HD
NewsGuest writes "Every year thousands of dogs are hobbled by a painful condition called hip dysplasia, a degenerative disease of the hip in which the ball and socket joints no longer fit tightly. This disabling ailment usually strikes large breeds, like Labrador retrievers, German shepherds and Saint Bernards. Dr. Kyle Mathews, assistant professor of small animal surgery at North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, is among a team of veterinarians who have developed a new method of preventing hip dysplasia. The procedure they're developing, called Juvenile Pubic Symphysidesis (JPS), is less invasive than other treatments and shows great promise as a permanent preventive measure. ...."

NewsLink found in animal temperament, bone size
18 July 2002

Adding cattle to your herd? Look for big, solid animals. New research claims cattle with fine bones may have a more skittish temperament than those with a heavier frame. FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Livestock handlers may be better able to predict which animals will experience stress in certain situations, according to an animal behavior specialist at Colorado State University. This comes from a research project where it was found that cattle with fine bones may have a more skittish temperament than those with a heavier frame. In the study, animals with a calmer temperament had cannon bones that were 5 percent wider and 9 percent thicker than high-strung animals with thinner bones. ....
